The human element
The talking head interview is a staple of corporate video. When it’s important to put a personal face to the message, when a human element is essential, nothing really beats the talking head.
But creating a good talking head is an art. If you get it wrong, it can send entirely the wrong message.
Tim Mason is the CEO of Eagle Eye, a tech company that facilitates direct marketing to customers via their mobile phones.
They asked Shoot You to make a talking head video with Tim to get his take on the company he runs, how the company might grow in the future and what the working environment is like at Eagle Eye.
Breaking the flow
Although the person talking is the important thing, the surroundings also need to be considered as incongruous or distracting backgrounds can affect the message. The decision was taken to film at Eagle Eye headquarters – the offices are stylish and modern and are a natural environment for the subject.
Occasional cut-aways; a slightly longer shot from another angle, some shots of the wider office, help break the flow. The longer shots allow us to include Tim’s very natural and evocative hand gestures.
He talks to an off-screen ‘interviewer’ rather than directly to the camera which can seem confrontational.
Tim is a very relaxed speaker, less confident subjects can be encouraged to give very engaging talking-heads by our skilled directors.
