Businesses have been increasingly turning to animation throughout the past few years to help deliver their key messages. From HR policies and training to product launches and social, its place within the communication mix is well and truly cemented. But how does an initial concept go from words within a brief to fully formed 3D models?

Well this is where the software comes in! Blender, is an open source 3D Creation Suite. Free for use by all, it has actually been around since the early 1990’s but its continuous intuitive developments over the past few years have increasingly made it a staple option for many in the animation community.

3D Animation

3Dimensional Animation is when motion is used to bring to life characters, images and/or objects within a digital space. For instance, it could be an architect looking to visualise how a new building may look from all angles or a biology professor looking to show how a blood cell moves through the body.

How is Blender used?

Within the Blender platform animators can produce visual effects, motion graphics or even character animation.

With the former it may be a scientifically based singular animation but with the latter it could be used to generate feature-length animated films. And its not just creating the assets, as the site itself states “Blender supports the entirety of the 3D pipeline—modelling, rigging, animation, simulation, rendering, compositing and motion tracking, even video editing and game creation”

What does this mean for you?

Having software such as this allows the animation production process to become more streamlined, more time efficient and ultimately helps to reduce the cost. All of this means that more and more, we can offer clients multiple options when it comes to how to interpret the brief and for many, a medium that was previously considered too expensive is now a possibility.

Are there alternatives?

Of course, as with any product or service there is always alternatives and in this case some examples are Cinema 4D, Maya and zBrush to name just a few. At Synima, the tools we use are dependent on the job at hand. Each has its benefits and drawbacks and so we take a view as to the best route for the brief we’re fufiling.
