Public information videos have been an enduring presence for decades for a simple reason, they’re proven to work. An interesting video that gets the viewer’s attention is likely to hold onto it for the short duration and the message will stick.
The most effective way of treating health issues is prevention, so it’s no surprise that Shoot You is regularly asked to produce videos that aim to raise public awareness about health matters.
Whether it’s alerting people to dangers in their environment or encouraging them to make lifestyle changes to improve their health, a video can reach a large audience and make behavioural change a subconscious choice.
Public information videos are subject to two main pitfalls. Their purpose is to highlight danger, but this can be done in a way that is not alarmist or unsettling to watch.
Likewise, it is important not to preach to the audience, a behaviour change is far more likely if you can convince the audience that they want to make that change.
In the video above, animation creates an atmosphere that is more informative than alarming, even if the consequences can be quite severe.
The audience’s attention is grabbed with some interesting statistics that lend themselves to graphical representation.
Once the risks are established, we then move swiftly on to the solution – a call to action that gives the audience an easy way to reduce risk.

Our clients requested content of around one minute. A good decision for public information videos, although they need to produce a complete message.
The stats they provided were helpful for drawing the audience in. Not many would know they used 3000 times as much air as food and drink, or how much of this is from the home.
Neither is the air we breathe in our homes pure, we live with a complex mix of materials, in an unregulated environment. The dangers needed to be expressed, along with useful solutions.
Viewers should be aware, the point of the exercise, yet be assured they can move forward in a positive way.

Public information benefits from a neutral stance. Rather than in this instance filming specific homes, animated video with clear graphics would fit well.
The large, colourful graphics our team created brought the topic to life, with a conscious choice to represent almost any home. A sound platform for our client’s well thought out script.
The detail they wanted expressed to help with health would be understood and remembered. Relevant numbers were amply expressed in visual clues, rather than scientific data.
