The E.U. requested a series of short animated videos, to highlight a public information campaign across social media.
Although we often translate video into every European language for the EU, they were keen to have no language in this case. In essence, a message which could be understood in context, regardless of the languages viewers used.
Several options were discussed but to meet the brief, stop motion animated video seemed a perfect solution. Able to create a visual language understood by all and instantly draw viewers in.
EU staff worked with us to establish suitable elements and an outline script, a guide for production by a fascination method.
Background To Stop Motion
Stop motion is not new, arguably responsible for creating the first moving pictures, at the end of the 19th century. A few decades later, we saw classics produced using the same principles, such as The Lost World and King Kong.
Popularity continued until the 1980s, when rising costs and the advent of computer technology led to rapid change. A few specialist centres continued but most productions headed in a different direction.
Thankfully, the birth of the techological age which led to a decline in stop motion production would ultimately start a renaissance.
Rapid advances in digital cameras made them suitable, software and asset management improved. Above all, the advent of 3D printing replaced the need for intensive model making, reducing cost and guaranteeing continuity.
Back To This Production
The short videos you see above are joined together and without the context of their campaigns, we essentially wanted to show what stop motion can produce.
In this case, we used additional technology, a Rhino Slider with electronic motion control to give perfect timing to shots, again saving time and money.
We worked closely with our clients on script, storyboard and early visual stages. The final capture on stop motion video is exactly that, ensuring everyone is happy with the plan is good management.
Although the “voice” would be visual, a well plotted sound track was synced in, part of developing the character and narrative that stop motion offers.
Then just a case of supplying all formats required by our client and the videos were ready to roll.
The combination of charm and novelty stop motion video can create is ideal for social media. A type of animated video suited to a place where quick storytelling and fluid motion are at home.
We understand the productions proved popular and helped get across key messages. A positive aspect of stop motion production now and in the future.
Stop motion can be filmed in 360 degree spheres or 3d scanned by lasers and cameras. An opportunity for viewers to immerse themselves in the worlds your ideas create, no limits beyond what you can imagine.
