Emotions And Decisions
The human brain is not like a computer, pros and cons weighed up, logical decisions made. Nature has decreed that our decisions lie elsewhere.
The neuroscientist Antonio Damasio conducted a groundbreaking study of people with brain injuries to emotionally related areas. That they couldn't feel emotions made sense but they couldn't make decisions either.
Our growing ability to monitor brain activity has added further knowledge. A storm of unconscious neural activity underlies decision making, our conscious mind at best an arbiter, helping us feel in control.
Dangerous situations can bring a more analytical response but for decisions on innovation, growth, on choice generally, our subconscious is in charge and emotion will win the day.
The Digital Advantage
Fighting against two million years of evolution holds no purpose. We now know that conscious choice is often an illusion, so we should create emotion engaging experiences, to aid discovery and decision.
The primary input for this is visual. Our brains use a high percentage of their power to process images and by doing so, create a magical opportunity for digital imagery to influence decisions.
Images people see, particularly moving images, create an emotional front runner. Often to the point of instilling a bias which will unknowingly overcome any further evaluation.
Incisive video helps people discover what feels right, what will be to their advantage. An opportunity open to marketers and their messages, as long as you take a creative approach.
